Weylandts Studio, a South African-based interior design firm, that prides itself in designing timeless designs with natural textures, renovated an apartment in Johannesburg and created modern spaces with an ageless character.
The colors and materials selected for this project beautifully align with Weylandts Studio’s distinctive design style. They bring a sense of grace and purpose to these spaces. The use of dark metal in the furniture and stairs, the inclusion of a rattan light fixture, and the rawness of the natural wood grain in the dining room and open kitchen all come together to craft a serene, sophisticated, and inviting ambiance that truly complements this section of the apartment.
The common thread throughout our work is a sense of authenticity – an element that is evident in the noble materials with which we work. Wood, leather and stone bring a realness to the end result. Ours is not a shimmery, shiny style that loses its lustre after a few seasons, but rather a look that follows nature’s cue and is true to the raw beauty of natural textures.
Weylandts Studio – About Us
In this modern apartment renovation, the designers maintained the layout of all the spaces except for the addition of a bar in the living room and the arrangement of the fittings in the bathroom. The wood used for the bar has a similar grain pattern and shade to the one used in the open kitchen. Ample open and closed storage for glasses and bottles of wine was provided while maintaining the consistent clean and mature outlook of other spaces. They also used the dark shade from the metal features in the kitchen in the creation of the new TV console.
The plumbing fittings in the bathroom were skillfully repositioned to align neatly along the wall hosting the window. This thoughtful arrangement effectively divides the space into functional zones, greatly enhancing the bathroom’s usability and comfort. To maintain an open and spacious feel in this not-so-large bathroom, a frameless transparent glass enclosure for the shower area was chosen to ensure visual continuity throughout the space.
The designer’s choice of colors and textures in the bathroom harmonizes seamlessly with the modern and classic design theme of the entire house. The polished and textured tiles echo the warm wooden brown tones used in other areas, creating a cohesive aesthetic. Dark-colored accessories were deliberately incorporated to further complement and elevate the overall design.
In order to elevate the once monotonous appearance of the bedroom, they made some striking additions. They thoughtfully incorporated a bold, matted leather headboard and a dark-toned nightstand into the space. To infuse a sense of personal style, the room was adorned with throw pillows featuring nature-inspired patterns and a matte-brass table lamp. With the cane chandelier and these carefully chosen elements, the bedroom now has a unique and welcoming character.
Weylandts Studio’s modern apartment renovation would not have been truly complete without giving the open kitchen its much-needed makeover. The once-closed upper cabinets were thoughtfully replaced with open floating shelves, imparting an airier and more inviting ambiance. They extended the breakfast table to comfortably accommodate three people, on leather-upholstered metal stools adding a touch of sophistication.
In the cooking area, they introduced a practical tile backsplash, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. The choice of fittings, cooker hood, select appliances, and decorative elements all conformed to a rich, dark color palette, in harmony with the staircase’s color. These changes not only elevated the overall quality of the space but also created an illusion of spaciousness, perfectly complementing the modern theme of the entire house.
The warmth and sophistication from the open kitchen spilled over into the dining area. The old white venetian blinds were replaced with wall-to-wall, off-white translucent drapes, allowing controlled daylight into the space while preserving privacy. The four-seater dining set was swapped for a larger six-seater, with a wooden table and dark seats to match the theme. To complete the transformation, texture was added to the walls, a sizable wall art piece was introduced, and the wall skirting was changed to a continuous white strip, giving the room a cohesive and modern look.
