Remi Kuforiji, an architect, spatial practitioner, and researcher at G.A.S. Lagos, recently announced an upcoming event aimed at exploring innovative approaches to preserving Afro-Brazilian history and culture in Lagos. Titled “Playful Preservation,” the free workshop is scheduled to take place on the 4th of April 2024 at G.A.S. Lagos.
The event invites members of the creative community, including artists, architects, artisans, performers, and thinkers, to participate in a symposium addressing the preservation of the unique urban fabric of the Afro-Brazilian community on Lagos Island. Participants will engage in discussions and propose alternative strategies while collaborating on collages, drawings, and experimental interventions based on archival and contemporary photographs of Afro-Brazilian architecture in Lagos.
A highlight of the workshop is the prototype play of “Anti-Monopoly: Brazilian Quarters,” a board game conceptualized by Remi Kuforiji. Unlike traditional Monopoly, this game rewards players for preserving Afro-Brazilian buildings on Lagos Island, emphasizing cultural heritage over commercial development. By navigating through gameplay mechanics such as restoration instead of development and preservation budgets instead of bankruptcy, participants delve into the complexities of conserving the cultural memory intertwined with Lagos-Brazil relations.
Interested individuals are encouraged to apply for participation by the 2nd of April 2024. The event will run from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the G.A.S. Foundation located at 9b, Hakeem Dickson Drive, off TF Kuboye Road, Oniru, Lagos. While the workshop is free, space is limited, and allocation will be based on successful application submissions.
“Playful Preservation” promises to be a stimulating platform for reimagining heritage preservation strategies through creative collaboration and critical engagement.
