Urko Sanchez Architects recently unveiled design for a mixed-use building in Kampala, Uganda, weaving traditional influences around sustainable architecture.
According to the architects, the challenge for this mixed-use building in Kampala was to include “offices, retail and a residential program in a functional way plus integrating a large scale building in a low-density residential neighborhood.” To achieve this, they split the building into three units with a common plinth. The design also features warm-toned brick facade characterized by dynamic textural patterns and integrated greenery, creating a visually engaging exterior.
Inspired by Uganda’s rural clay ovens, this brick mixed-use building in Kampala embraces natural cooling with lattices and brise soleil, blending tradition with sustainability in Kololo.

The building design takes inspiration from Uganda’s rural clay ovens, incorporating natural cooling techniques and lush greenery.

The building’s interior design continues the interweaving of modern minimalism and traditional influences. A dramatic rusted-metal spiral staircase takes center stage in the modern lobby, complemented by expansive floor-to-ceiling glass walls that connect the indoor space with lush outdoor landscaping.

Embracing a tropical architectural style, the design emphasizes sustainability through natural materials and abundant landscaping, creating a unique and inviting environment that promotes both comfort and community engagement.
