Zero-Energy Building in Accra Showcases Sustainable Design by S. Tetteh + Associates

The Zero-Energy Building in Accra, Ghana, designed by S. Tetteh + Associates, was officially inaugurated on November 8, 2024, marking a milestone in sustainable architecture for Ghana.

Developed in collaboration with GIZ Ghana and the Energy Commission of Ghana, this Nearly Zero-Energy Building in Accra serves as a demonstration model for energy-efficient government office buildings.

The building’s design prioritizes energy conservation with cavity walls of interlocking stabilised earth bricks and low-emissivity double glazing to minimize heat gain. Sunshades crafted from denya hardwood and galvanized steel further protect the facades, enhancing its distinct aesthetic.

Inside, accents like woven pendants inspired by local basketry and rammed earth walls reflect Ghanaian craftsmanship.

Generating 88% of its energy from on-site solar panels, the facility uses R290 refrigerant-based air conditioning and efficient fittings, managed by an advanced Energy Management System. This model structure will support training workshops and inspire future energy-conscious building designs in Ghana.
