In 2021, Architect Stephen Ajadi and his team at Ruban Office designed a religious project in the southwest region of Nigeria. This project redefines the relationship between public and private spaces in religious contexts, particularly in diverse neighborhoods.
Located strategically in an area with a history of ethnic and religious tensions, this initiative questions the role of architecture in promoting tolerance and knowledge-sharing within the Islamic community.
The Ruban Office team embarked on researches in the area that highlighted the need for better religious education among youth and a dedicated space for it. The project comprises a community Masjid (mosque), adaptable classrooms, a library, and an Imam’s residence. These components can merge and adapt spatially as needed, accommodating changing social dynamics and activities.
The facility aims to provide free general and religious education to local youth while also serving as a space for daily prayers and fostering community bonds. The design phase was completed in 2021, marking a significant milestone as the project moves forward to its next phase.
Our practice is based on continuously finding the relationship of the rural and the urban and where they are going with their stories. More importantly; the place of humans and animals in the tale of both spaces. This is why we are RUBAN
