Localworks Uganda, a design and build firm in Uganda has officially commenced construction on the Olangama Community Hub – a significant project commissioned by Fight For The Forgotten to benefit the Batwa community and locals in Karambi.
The groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of Phase 1, which includes the development of a Community Centre and a Health Centre. This project is part of a broader master plan envisioned to encompass staff housing and essential infrastructure, designed with sustainability and cultural sensitivity in mind.
According to Localworks Uganda, the masterplan for the Olangama Community Hub strategically spreads the program across four plots. Plot 1 will house the Health Centre, which is isolated to reduce sanitary risks. Plot 2 is designated for staff housing, offering the most privacy. Plot 3 will feature the Community Centre and School, with the Community Centre and sports field located closest to the existing trading centre to take advantage of the flattest area of the site. Finally, Plot 4 will accommodate guest housing. The school’s design allows for easy phasing, with a series of single-storey blocks that can share spaces such as the sports field and hall with the Community Centre.
The buildings will feature EcoPrefab wall panels, combining timber frames with lime and papyrus infill blocks finished with earth plaster, merging traditional building techniques with modern design principles.
We look forward to seeing the completion of Phase One and how the community hub and health centre in the Olangama Community Hub will take shape. These structures are expected to reflect the design and sustainable practices that Localworks Uganda is implementing, and it will be interesting to see how they will serve the Batwa community and locals in Karambi.
