Set in Stone (and Wood): The SOOD Concept House

Last updated:

The SOOD concept refers to a housing system consisting of  external walls made of layered wooden blocks covered with natural stone. This system allows for an eco-friendly house designed with innovative building technologies, assuring comfort, technical efficiency and aesthetic balance.

Conceived by Prof. Arch. Giuseppe Fallacara, Marco Stigliano, Ubaldo Occhinegro, Micaela Colella, Maurizio Barberio, the idea of SOOD stems from a business network combining skills, technical knowledge and concepts to design wooden and stone habitats at the cutting-edge of technology.

In order to design efficient and eco-friendly solutions, SOOD  couples  the know-how of  business with the mastery of technicians, as well as  the engagement of a  team of young architectural researchers from the Polytechnic of Bari (DICAR Department) who have been carrying out  construction tests of eco-friendly buildings for over a decade.

Sketech

The SOOD concept finds its footing in History as it seeks to reinterpret the ancient values of Mediterranean building culture, combining stone and wood in the proportion and perfection that typifies the architecture of this region. This contemporary iteration represents an energy efficient, modular system of housing that combines tradition and technology.

THE PROTOTYPE

The prototype has been conceived with a modular structure, having a span 5.50 m (width) and a variable length, which can be assembled both laterally and vertically according to several volumetric combinations. It has a double pitched roof section.

From an aesthetical point of view, it appears extremely compact and made of a single material. Natural stones are used to cover all the surfaces, vertical walls as well as the  roof. The final result is a malleable sculpture, as if it was an enormous block of stone skillfully moulded.

The implementation of a fully glazed wall as a passive solar system is useful in order to reach the high levels of sustainability which are the aim of the house, and moreover improves the performance of the electrical and heating systems.

SOOD BUILDING SYSTEM

Sood building system and structure is based on a wooden frame comprising pillars, crosspieces, cross bracings  and trusses. The most innovative point is the utilization of a stratified pre-built block especially patented for the casing, which makes the work on site easier and faster. Indeed, the external surface of the house arrives there already prepared.

The prefab block is used to clad both vertical walls by means of specially shaped blocks, grooves and horizontal surfaces.

INTERNAL FINISHING

The internal finishing will be customized depending on each and every user requirements: internal walls can be covered with a wooden boiserie and the ceiling with a wooden vault. The use of a further layer made of an insulating material, or as an alternative a material with an high level or thermal inertia, increases the performances of the casing.

This second solution will allow the house to reach good thermal performances both in cold-dry conditions, increasing the insulating capacity of the casing, and in hot-moist conditions, increasing the thermal inertia capacity of the casing.

SOOD HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY

The house is designed with the aim of  granting a well-balanced air exchange, as well as a reduction in excessive humidity. The use of untreated and certified natural materials, allows for easy maintenance and the potential recycle of all materials. The house heating and cooling processes are minimized thanks to passive systems and controlled natural ventilation.

Aggregation

As is evident, SOOD offers a beautiful, practical, efficient and flexible design, that balances aesthetics with function, reduces energy consumption and takes a modular approach that permits customization to make each home personal to its residents.

Though founded in the past, the SOOD concept with the use of technology and sustainable principles looks to the future to improve the quality of life and living.
