Bodulo Benches by Wiid Design Creatively Combine Plywood, Leather and Cork

Last updated:

Described as “a vibrant interpretation of Sotho culture” the Bodulo benches are the result of a collaborative effort between South African product designer Khosi Leteba and leading South African design studio Wiid Design with Creative Direction by Tracy Lynch of the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout.

Manufactured in Cape Town, the Bodulo benches are made predominantly from organic and completely recyclable dark or light cork. The dark cork is manufactured from recycled cork particles and is produced industrially without the use of additives and requires low energy consumption. Whereby the light cork is 98.5% natural with a small amount of adhesive to bind the granules, making it durable and user friendly.

On the solid cork bench version of the Bodulo bench, the seat is manufactured from high quality upholstered leather with artworks and graphics printed onto the surface, while on the plywood version the seat is machined from solid 25mm thick dark composite cork, left natural, untreated but sanded to a smooth finish. The plywood version of the Bodulo bench is however, manufactured from high quality Finnish Birch ply, finished and coated in a durable Satin lacquer. The graphics and artwork is applied by hand and sprayed with 3 coats of blanco matte white Montana spray paint. Images courtesy justin patrick photography
