The new AIS Lagos Innovation and Design Centre, designed by Nigerian Architects, Design Union and built by ELALAN Construction Company, exemplifies the transformative result of adaptive reuse.
Captured through the lens of photographer Mujib Ojeifo, the project breathes new life into a disused staff residence building, transforming it into a modern and dynamic innovation and design centre that fosters creativity, collaboration, and innovation within the students, while addressing sustainability.
Adaptive reuse allows older buildings to serve new purposes while conserving resources and mitigating environmental impact. The new learning environment supports STEAM learning, providing spaces for science laboratories, multimedia spaces, a design and technology lab, band halls, a cafeteria, a fitness center, and an elevated multi-court play area.
The design features a striking glazed and perforated metal facade, incorporating natural daylighting and natural ventilation. The project not only revitalizes the campus but also ensures long-term sustainability, avoiding unnecessary expansion while fostering a vibrant learning environment.
