House DUK in Johannesburg, South Africa is a spacious, modern, 4 bedroom home that expresses an appreciation for outdoor living.
Designed by SA-based Nico Van Der Meulen Architects, the 600+sqm home features an open plan layout that flows seamlessly onto a generous garden. Earthy tones and materials such as natural wood and stone help the home blend in with its natural surroundings while also providing a strong contrast for the extensive use of steel and glass as well as off-shutter concrete.
The bold forms and geometry of the home are made more evident by the solid entrance walls on the approach facade of the home which give way, upon entry through the glass front doors, to a more transparent and open layout, with views of the swimming pool and rear garden.

This openness is emphasised by a number of interior elements, one of which is the central ‘floating’ staircase with glass balustrades. The staircase, which can be seen from almost anywhere within the main living area, gives the home a certain airy feel. The home also remains brights thanks to large amounts of daylights that flow deep into the home via the large fold-away glass walls that blur the lines between outside and in.
