Remarkable Highlights from Bisila Noha’s G.A.S. Foundation Residency Exploring Nigeria’s Ceramic Traditions

London-based ceramicist, writer, and researcher Bisila Noha recently completed a six-week G.A.S. Foundation residency, where she explored Nigeria’s ceramic traditions.

To mark the conclusion of her G.A.S. Foundation residency, she hosted “Ile Ọkàn – A Gathering at the House of the Soul” on 13 February 2025. The event centered around Ile Ọkàn, a temporary structure she built using reclaimed bricks, bamboo, banana leaves, and hand-crafted tiles inspired by Nupe flooring.

Drawing from the tradition of Mbari houses, distinct cultural and spiritual edifices of the Igbo people, Bisila envisioned the space as a site for meditation, spiritual reflection, and communal exchange.

The gathering concluded with a collaborative clay molding workshop, where attendees created clay offerings placed around the installation. This G.A.S. Foundation residency was generously supported by kó Art Space, reinforcing Noha’s commitment to material culture and storytelling.
