Black Pepper Paperie Co. recently unveiled the Griot collection – a set of vibrant generative AI art prints created with Midjourney.
Also known as the Izora series, this collection of art prints is the first coming from Black Pepper Paperie’s Ancestor Index – an expression of Hadiya Williams’s work where she translates her handmade ceramic works and surface prints into impressive, vibrant, and eccentric generative AI art with Midjourney – a generative artificial intelligence program and service.
Following Hadiya’s exploration with Midjourney, she’s launched the T-shirts, the index cards, and now the Izora series. As described on their website,
The prints delve into the profound stories of Black Migration, capturing the spirit of movement and change. Amidst this journey, Black Women emerge as central figures, embodying strength, grace, and vulnerability. The inclusion of clay objects serves as a symbolic bridge, connecting the tactile with the ethereal, embodying the versatile layers of cultural identity.
Each of the Vibrant Generative AI Art in the series is 8 by 8 in size and is printed on high-quality archival art paper. They feature the artist’s signature style of vibrant colours, layered patterns, and composite shapes; paired with a vivid portrait of a black woman.
While the interpretation of art is subjective, it helps to know the story behind it. Hadiya’s use of vibrant ceramics in the Izora series successfully reflects the rich multicultural diversity of the black woman’s heritage – in the place where she’s rooted or where she’s been transplanted. They are visually engaging conversation starters, whether as decor objects or with deeper meaning.
