Nestled in Vilnius, Lithuania is a remarkably designed one storey house. The Y shaped Villa G as it is called is a triangular house with elongated ends and a distinctive curved roof that doubles as the continuous back wall of the structure.
Following the typography of its site, the 4 bedroom home has a large footprint with a shell like structure that sees its curved roof flowing into the curved walls which also have accordion like ‘gathers’ at the nodes of curves along its fluid structure. A seamless blend of laminated timber and glass make up the facade of the home with a prominent timber pergola extending outward at one end providing shade for a swimming pool terrace, while another end with similar treatment serves as the carport adjacent to a timbered privacy wall leading to the main entrance of the house.
The living area forms the core the building in an open plan fashion, housing the living and dining areas, all arranged around a curvaceous central triangular support column. From this living area you have a pleasant view of the surrounding vegetation via extensive curtain walling. Glass doors within the curtain walling lead to an outdoor walkway with seating to create that very nice ‘indoor/outdoor’ ambiance.
Two curvilinear arms or wings with the aforementioned accordion curves make up the other functional spaces within the house, which include a sizeable kitchen just off the dining area, 3 bedrooms each with a study area all sharing a bathroom (my least favourite part) and an ensuite master bedroom with a large walk-in closet.
For all intents and purposes, one could call it a mansion, but rather than grandiose opulence, the Villa G exudes masterful design and function that is supremely practical, (save for a few parts that I disagree with) and is a beauty to behold.
