The Noelle apartment building, designed by Nigerian Architects, Studio Stoone Designs – is a multi-occupancy residential development by Stoones Place to provide affordable yet functional housing for young families and professionals.

Located in a serene, leafy close in Ojodu, Lagos, the Noelle apartment building consists of three-bedroom apartments and a four-bedroom penthouse maisonette. Completed in January 2023, the project reflects the vision of Stoones Place to create a vibrant community in the heart of Lagos.

The design by Studio Stoone Designs leverages the unique topography of the 934 sqm triangular plot. The architects conceptualized a building that appears to grow organically from the laterite-rich site, optimizing natural elements to enhance livability. The orientation of the Noelle residential development takes advantage of southwest winds, ensuring all rooms are cross-ventilated. This approach minimizes the reliance on mechanical ventilation, making the apartments energy-efficient.

The concept involved a building that will grow out from the laterite-filled site, taking into cognizance the topography of the site.

The project features five three-bedroom apartments, each with three bathrooms, and a four-bedroom, four-bathroom penthouse maisonette on the top floor. Every unit includes a maid’s room on the ground floor, which was reimagined during the COVID-19 pandemic as potential home office spaces. This adaptation highlighted the project’s flexibility, catering to evolving lifestyles.

The architects also challenged Nigerians traditional preferences by introducing open-plan kitchens connected to the living and dining areas. While this modern approach was well-received, the kitchen design accommodates light partitioning for those who prefer enclosed spaces. Each kitchen is fully equipped, ensuring functionality for homeowners.

According to the Architects, “Moments throughout the building were created to encourage neighbors to interact with each other”. Part of their goal was to create a development that fosters a sense of community. As such, communal spaces for gatherings, laundry, and relaxation were inccorporated.

Aesthetically, the Noelle residential development blends practicality with thoughtful design. The southeast-facing back elevation is finished with laterite Tyrolean – a textured laterite sand and cement mix with insulation properties. Not only does this helps in cooling the multi occupancy apartment building, it’s a nod to the natural laterite soil of the site. The burnt orange hue contrasts with the clean white and grey tones of the front elevation, creating a visually striking façade.

Studio Stoone Designs prides itself on delivering functional and high-quality architectural solutions. “Our work is driven by the desire to create meaningful spaces that respond to the needs of the built environment,” said Abiodun Shonibare, one of the lead architects.

The Noelle apartment building stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating spaces that inspire community, sustainability, and modern living.
