Our Visits to selected buildings (pre-event)
We had the opportunity of visiting 2 of the selected buildings in Ikoyi over the months leading up to this weekend’s events, the JOI House by Chuka Ihonor and the LASWA Ferry Terminal/Office by ACCL. Here’s a look at our experience.
JOI House by Chuka Ihonor
In 1988, Chuka Ihonor designed the JOI House in Parkview Estate Ikoyi, which was built in 1991. It stands as a modest Modernist home on a square footprint of 10.8m by 10.8m on a small plot with a small garden. The building is a lesson in design of Modernist space and shares a plot with another, larger building.
LASWA Ferry Terminal/Office by ACCL
The new terminal building for Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) overlooking the Five Cowrie Creek from the banks at Falomo Ikoyi is also the authority’s head office. Designed in 2009 by ACCL, nautical references abound: curved façade, porthole windows and large volume interior space. By no means the first of this kind, it is one in a prominent location.
