The first edition of the West African Architecture Festival (WAAF 2016) will be taking place on the 24th-28th of October at the Obi Wali Oil and Gas Conference Center, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.
The event, organized by the Nigerian Institute of Architecture is a gathering of professionals that seeks to “celebrate the achievements of West African Architects, its architecture and the relationship with the allied professionals; its influence in the lifestyle, outlook and culture of the people in the sub Saharan region and its global impact”.
The event will feature exhibitions of Architects and student works, building products exhibition, workshops and seminars, arts and crafts, tours and entertainment. The speakers for the event will include:
DEMAS NWOKO
A Nigerian artist, protean designer and architect.
As an artist, he strives to incorporate modern techniques in architecture and stage design to enunciate the African subject matters in most of his works.
BISHOP MATTHEW HASSAN KUKAH
The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto
He studied Philosophy and Theology at Augustine Major Seminary Jos, Plateau State and was ordained a Catholic Priest on December 19, 1979. Kukah also attended the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a diploma in Religious Studies and holds a Bachelor of Divinity Degree from the Urban University Rome, a master’s degree in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom and a PhD from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
REMMENT LUCAS “REM” KOOLHAAS
A Dutch architect, architectural theorist, urbanist and Professor in Practice of Architecture and Urban Design at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
He is widely regarded as one of the most important architectural thinkers and urbanists of his generation.
