Ibukun is a renovated two-bedroom house in Lagos by Nigerian Architects, elArc Designs. Located in Kosofe local government area, the home features an earthy colour palette inspired by the clients love for plants.
According to the architects, the brief was to redesign an empty 124sqm bungalow into a warm two-bedroom house, taking into consideration the client’s need for privacy and a space that complements her lifestyle.

A key challenge experienced by the designers was addressing the client’s privacy concern. To solve this, they created a layout that subtly separates public and private areas. The public areas were left open to encourage visual continuity. The only visible doors are those for exit/entry and that of the home office, said the architects. “All other doors to private spaces are tucked away – subconsciously setting boundaries for visitors”.
What we did to solve this was to make public areas open, with visual continuity while we hid private spaces like the main bedroom.

The experience of visual continuity can be seen across the living room, from the living area to the open plan kitchen. According to the architects, the client wanted an open plan kitchen that would allow her engage with her guests while cooking. The kitchen stands out in the living room, featuring a combination of open and closed storage in white and cappuccino coloured cabinets and floating shelves.
The slender island and textured dwarf wall subtly completes the zoning of the living area and the open plan kitchen, while encouraging engagement. This further enhances the home’s welcoming atmosphere. The area for the kitchen is further defined by the white and cappuccino coloured-hexagon tiles used for the floor.

The pallet choice for the living area was inspired by the client being a plant-mom, said the architects. “Earthy tones and natural textures were chosen for the walls and floors, large windows were also introduced to allow for maximum natural lighting and ventilation”.
A unique feature of this two-bedroom house in Lagos is the primary bedroom’s dark grey bathroom. Featuring an interesting layering of textured grey plaster wall, dark grey tiles and granite, it contrasts beautifully with the earthy palette of the rest of the house – adding a touch of drama and elegance. The main bedroom was also fitted with a walk-in closet, ensuring comfort and luxury.

The architects also incorporated practical elements like an outdoor gym at the rear of the building, adding to the functionality of the home. Materials such as granite, wood, and natural stone tiles were the predominant material used throughout, giving the home a grounded and timeless appeal.

Throughout the project, the client expressed gratitude and the feeling of being blessed, says the architects. Hence, the inspiration of the project’s name “Ibukun” – which means “Blessing” in the Yoruba speaking tribe of Nigeria.
