Earlier this month the administration of the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) in Nigeria organised an architectural design competition to develop a model National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp for the FCT in Kwali, which would also serve as a benchmark for the other orientation camps across the Federation.
This is a very welcome development as the state of orientation camps in the country is (for lack of a better word) APPAULING!!. The competition offered varying approaches and ideas to realise the most suitable design for the project. That honour would go to the winning entry from Globarch Associates. (Have a look at the brief for the competition)
A contemporary, ecological campus with a design aesthetic that is not the norm in the Nigerian landscape. It features some very interesting forms and compositions as well as one of my personal favourites, yes, you guessed it, container architecture for the popular Mammy Market. To me its a triumph of deliberate, decisive design that takes the environment into consideration. Heres a look at the winning entry.
