Manhattan-based MB Architecture have recently completed a 167 sqm home using six shipping containers in the leafy East Hampton Village of Amagansett.
The four-bedroom, three bathroom, modular shipping container home emphasizes indoor/outdoor living for a couple with three young children, who had been looking for an alternative to the generic wood-shingled homes in the area. The compact home is less expensive and take less time to build as the containers were prefabricated off site before being trucked to the site and installed in two days.
The home features a glassed-in walkway the connects the double volume open-plan living areas to a separate bedroom wing. Floor-to-ceiling windows and glazed doors help create the indoor/outdoor living experience with seamless connections in view or access. BM marine-grade paint were used to coat corrugated metal walls of the container removing the need for any additional cladding.
One of the most prominent features of the home is the cantilevered bedroom which was created using half of a 20ft container. The structural design of this cantilever is unique as there are no visible beams underneath which gives it the appearance of floating. The extension is structured from the roof and held back in tension, down to the foundation on the opposite side. This is made possible by the inherent structural strength of the containers themselves.
“[It’s the] culmination of 10 years of research prototyping…. a breakthrough project for us and we hope will provide a template for many future homeowners who may want to bypass the typical process of custom-designing and building homes.”
