Few architectural projects stir the imagination as much as the transformation of a familiar structure into an entirely different purpose. The remodel of an old primary school into a modern family home by Bold Studio is a striking example of this, manifesting the dynamic and transformative nature of architecture.
In the heart of Abuja, the walls that once echoed with the sound of children’s learning gave way to the foundations of a domestic haven, thanks to the ingenious work of the local architectural design studio, Bold Studio Ng. They made it their mission to ensure that the design of the new family home was not only functional but also paid homage to the existing architecture.
To start their creative journey, Bold Studio first demolished all non-structural partitions. This strategic move provided them with an open canvas, a clean slate upon which they could envision and execute their innovative design, unhindered by previous constraints.
Eager to make the modern family home comfortable and energy-efficient, they initiated a series of changes to make the structure more responsive to its environment. The primary method employed was the enlargement of window sizes on the south-facing walls. This adaptation allowed for better harnessing of daylight, improving ventilation, and creating a brighter and more airy living space.
The demolition process resulted in a spacious open plan, which offered Bold Studio the opportunity to plan and furnish the interior according to various functional requirements. The interior design was carefully curated, featuring a neutral colour palette punctuated by intermediate pops of colour through artworks and decor elements. These carefully chosen elements served to add character and depth to the spaces, making each room unique yet harmonious with the overall aesthetic of the modern family home.
In a bid to ensure that the spaces remained adaptable and flexible to the changing needs of the occupants, Bold Studio opted to use modular furniture pieces, particularly on the ground floor. This clever design decision allows for the furniture to be repositioned according to the evolving needs of the family. Wood, a material known for its warmth and versatility, was used extensively in the interior fit-out, adding a touch of nature to the living area and bedrooms.
In essence, the project showcases the transformative power of architecture, where an old primary school can be reimagined and repurposed into a functional, and aesthetically pleasing modern family home.
