Spectrum Apartments is a unique residential development in Australia designed by Kavellaris Urban Design (KUD). The 5 storey structure houses 71 apartments covering a total of 7400 sqm.
The site of development has three frontages and as such the building needed to be able to respond to this location by visually engaging the public in a unique and appealing manner. As a result, the massing of the design is expressed in strips. These “strips” geometrically alternate one floor after the other to create highly articulated façades. The terminations of the “Strips” are expressed with brightly coloured fascia around the balconies, offering a vibrant aesthetic that lends a peculiar character to the community.
The articulation of the strips is also carried through into certain interior spaces like kitchens and toilets. The materials and colours follow a similar language in the interiors as well, to achieve the aim of architectural uniformity. Another interesting aspect of the design is the circulation corridors. These corridors are open to sky, acting as “lungs” for the development. These lungs function to permit daylight and natural ventilation while supporting the growth of plants and vegetation in within the space. This becomes a pleasant, dynamic space as one walks from one part of the building to another.
