Nigerian Interior Designers, Five 28, recently designed and fitted the IDEAX Labs – an innovation hub in Lagos for Wema Bank – its first in it’s 79 year history.
According to the designers, the design concept of this innovation hub in Lagos was to create an experience that resonates with the values of Wema bank (Passion, Progressive, Partnership, Plenty & Play), by creating a fusion of modern and innovative design which aims to foster collaboration, creativity and technological advancements.
The design features an open layout centered around creating a dynamic & flexible space. The designers achieved this through thoughtful furniture zoning which can be seen from the sitting booths to workstations, as well as, futuristic elements like modular seating and an interactive wall for team bonding.
“Set against a backdrop of neutral tones, colors present in the bank’s branding element have been strategically displayed throughout the space to reinforce its identity as well as other vibrant colors used to buttress the main essence of the idea of an innovative space” – says the designers.
The walls were painted black, white and yellow to create a striking visual contrast and enhance the dynamic appeal of the space. The black and white colours provided a classic, elegant foundation, while the yellow colour infused a burst of energy and brightness – adding vibrancy and focus to key areas within the space.
According to the designers, different light fixtures and temperatures were used to define zones within the space. “Warmer lights were used to create a cozy atmosphere in relaxation areas, while cooler, brighter lights were used to enhance focus in work zones. Some fixtures offer adjustable settings, allowing them to switch between warm white, cool white, and bright white to suit various needs. To ensure each area is both functional and stylish, some statement fixtures were also installed”.

Another intentional aspect of this modern workspace in Lagos is the choice of flooring materials. To define distinct work zone within the space, SPC flooring was used beneath the workstation table, successfully separating it from the other flooring to enhance functionality and visually differentiate the area dedicated to focused tasks.
For the rest of the space, carpet tiles were used to create a cohesive, comfortable environment, providing a soft, durable surface that complements the SPC flooring of the work zone, while enhancing the overall design and functionality of the area.
Five 28 added a playful twist to the space by designing an interactive feature wall for the innovation hub. According to them, the highlight of this wall is a custom-built, four-sided rotating box that invites users to engage in a game of Tic-Tac-Toe or solve a crossword puzzle. “Both games are thoughtfully designed, incorporating words and symbols that are indigenous to the bank’s identity. This feature not only fosters creativity and interaction but also reinforces the bank’s brand in a subtle yet meaningful way”.
The greenery introduced in the space helps create a sense of calm. Covering 80 square meters, the IDEAX Labs innovation hub represents a significant milestone for Wema Bank. Five28’s thoughtful design approach reflects the firm’s dedication to creating a well thought through design that enhances both functionality and aesthetics.
