(Ultra) Photo-Realistic Renderings for Akili Tower in Nairobi by The Boundary

London based Visual Effects company The Boundary, are the team behind a series of (ultra) photo-realistic renderings of the Akili Tower, a mixed use development in Upper Hill Nairobi, Kenya.

The renderings which were recently released by Richard Keep Architects and Henry Goss Architects, (the firms behind the project) depict the wedge-shaped building in a toned down 1970s concrete feel set to a foggy seemingly rainy backdrop. The inclusion of “real world imperfections” as seen in the close up images of the facade is one of the major elements that make these renderings indistinguishable from images shot with a camera.


According to dezeen, the team at boundary used SketchUp and 3ds Max for the modelling stage of the process, and 3ds Max and Corona Renderer for the rendering process. Photoshop was used to add some small post-production effects.

Akili Tower is a 30 storey mixed use tower in Upper Hill, Nairobi, Kenya. The proposed site is on the prow of the hill over looking the Uhuru Park and the Central Business District. The shape of the tower is defined by the above ground requirement for car parking which forms the 6 levels separating the lower 3 levels of retail from the upper levels offices, restaurants and residential.

The car parking is a continuous ramp around the central core. The concrete external structural shell sets up a framework for the different uses a which have a different elevation treatments, appropriate to their use.

The deck level separating the car parking and the tower above contains restaurants opening on to the large terrace and gym with views over the city, while open plan offices occupy the next 12 floors with residential and penthouses over the top 6 floors.
