900 Plastic Chairs make up the Facade of this Furniture Showroom in the Czech Republic

A Czech-based architecture studio, Chybik + Kristof took an alternative approach to facade design in their recently completed office renovation project for furniture company, MY DVA Group.

The renovated building, located in the Czech city of Brno, was previously an auto showroom, with no visual connection to the furniture company’s brand or products. With this in mind, (and with a need for a fairly inexpensive solution), the architects made use of 900 black plastic chairs (standard Vicenza chair) manufactured by the client, to create a truly original and unique facade cladding. The chairs cover three sides of the 550 sqm space, with an angular, black-boxed entrance protruding from the midst of the irregular pattern created by the chairs.

This idea brings to life an appealing sculptural facade that is affordable (the chairs cost a little over $3/chair, which translates to around N1020/chair) and also quite practical as it requires minimal interference with the building. The individual seats are affixed to a large steel structure which is attached to the original facade. Each chair can therefore be removed once or twice a year when the building is high-pressure cleaned. The facade also clearly solves the need for context, serving as a form of advertising for the company’s products.

“We are a young studio and we think all our designs should be a bit funny,” ….But in a smart way of sharing information about the building’s programmatic function.”
