Duffy London Unveils Their New Table Collection Named Civilization

Duffy London, internationally acclaimed design studio, known for designs like the Abyss Table or the incredible UP Balloon Table, has revealed their brand-new collection of tables named Civilization.

Designed by Christopher Duffy for Duffy London, Civilization is a series of tables based on ancient temples and monuments from around the world carved straight out of the landscape with the most intricate skills.

The series features a limited edition of 11 pieces in three different versions named: Petra, Kailasa, and Hegra.

“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own, we have no soul of our own civilization.”

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

Petra

The Civilization table Petra, is based on the magnificent monument Al-Khazneh in the beautiful city of Petra, Jordan.

Kailasa

The Civilization table Kailasa, is based on the solemn Hindu Shrine at Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves, Maharashtra, India.

Hegra

The Civilization table Hegra, is based on Qasr-al-Farid, the largest monument in the city of
Mada’in Saleh (also called Hegra), in Saudi Arabia.

Made from marble and glass, each piece of the collection comes in both a dining table size (L-250cm W-120cm H-75cm) and a coffee table size (L-180cm W-100cm H-45cm), though they can be made bespoke to any required size and choice of stone/colour. With the selected stone carved entirely by hand in a painstaking process, it takes around 16 weeks to manufacture a table and costs range from £39,500 (ex. Vat) for the Dining Size to £27,500 (ex. Vat) for the Coffee Size.

“I’d been in discussions with a team of master stonemasons, on possible projects to work together on, we had come up with quite a few concepts, but nothing quite grabbed me, and then I saw a friend’s photographs from his Saudi Arabia trip. A picture he took at Qasr-al-Farid is how it all started. This was the perfect subject matter as these ancient monuments had long been fascinating to me. I then thought of Petra in Jordan and the Kailasa Temple in India. The ancient masters who designed and carved these most impressive pieces are impossible to improve upon, and so we have simply reinterpreted/rescaled their genius to make this series of pieces.”

About Duffy London

Duffy London’s designs are ideas-based, combining art and function and playing with the concepts of gravity, geography and illusion. The innovative and quirky designs spring from the mind of Christopher Duffy, however, he also draws from his talented team of designers, artisans and manufacturers to turn these concepts into quality pieces.

Boasting strong eco-credentials, everything is handmade to order by skilled craftspeople. Duffy
London’s most acclaimed design is the Abyss Table, a creative replica of a piece of the earth’s
seabed, to represent a concept of depth. Other noteworthy designs are the Shadow Chair, that
appears to defy gravity by standing on only two legs. The incredible UP Tables, which are a playful
trompe l’oeil, giving the impression of a glass table top being suspended by balloons. There is the
delightful Swing Table
, which will transport you back to your childhood.
